Many large service providers of defined benefit plans have focused primarily on their larger clients, causing small plans to seek service elsewhere. According to Hooker & Holcombe, a Connecticut-based actuarial and benefits consulting firm, plan providers that do cater to the small to mid-sized market have been seeing an inflow of frozen plans, looking for more customized solutions at a lower cost. This has caused DB plan administrators to expand their online capabilities for participants, providing a user-friendly interface, and enhanced accessibility with new tools and technology. The developments are providing more efficiency to plan administration. Due to these changes, Hooker & Holcombe recommends that all defined benefit plan providers, regardless of size, should actively be performing due diligence on plan administrators to evaluate enhancements and service improvements.
